Cats and the Positive Effect on our Mental Health and Well-Being

Having a pet and in particular a cat has been proven to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and relieve depression. In this article, Jo and Clare, our Cat Butler franchisees in Derby share how being a cat owner is positive for our mental health and well-being.

In this article:

It's been a long day at the office, it's the middle of November: dark, rainy and miserable outside. I open the door at last and call out: "Hello Pearl darling, Mummy's home!'" and suddenly my mood lifts - the weight of the world gone from my shoulders like magic.

Along the corridor she runs, so happy to see me, waiting patiently for her dinner, rubbing against my ankles as she purrs contentedly. Yes, you guessed it, Pearl is not my daughter (well not my human daughter anyway!) but my precious fur baby.

It will come as no surprise to fellow cat lovers that interacting with our furry friends can help decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol and lower blood pressure, furthermore, caring for a much-loved pet can also relieve depression and anxiety. The simple act of stroking your cat actually increases levels of the feel-good hormone oxytocin (the same hormone that bonds mothers to babies).

My twin sister and fellow Cat Butler, Clare, and I have certainly witnessed this phenomenon first-hand with several close relatives who have suffered from mental health issues and the vital role that their cats have played in their emotional well-being.

Our fur babies can provide emotional comfort - no matter how bad your day has been, the unconditional love of a cat is priceless. It's funny how they seem to know if you've had a bad day and will come over for a little cuddle and a therapeutic stroke. The benefits increase even further if you decide to adopt a rescue kitty - giving them a chance at a loving and secure home is a truly altruistic act.

So if you are planning to add a furry friend to your family, we can wholeheartedly recommend a feline companion.
